Vintage Inspired Clothing

The cycle of fashion design repeatedly turns to history for inspiration, and vintage inspired garments closely resembling original vintage, retro clothing or antique  clothing are manufactured for sale. An recent example of this was the simple slip dress that emerged in the early 1990s and was based on vintage undergarments of the 1930s. These fashion styles are generally referred to as "vintage inspired" or "vintage reproductions" depending on the faithfulness to the original historical design. These vintage reproductions serve as a convenient alternative to those who admire an old classic style of clothing but prefer a modern interpretation or adaptation.  Another advantage of Vintage Reproduction Clothing is that, unlike the original garments, they are usually available in a wider range of sizes colors and fabrics.

  • Some things to consider when buying real or vintage inspired clothing. Sizing: Many old garments were custom made and won't include sizing labels.  If they do have labels the old systems of sizing can often differ from today's modern ones.
  • Condition: Check the quality of the vintage fabric, seams for stitching required, vintage buttons that need replacing might be hard to find.  Hems may need altering and some vintage garments have cleaning requirements or restrictions. Stains and, more importantly, the likely success in removal of old stains and the correct storage of classic vintage garments. For example; it is inadvisable to hang a beaded 1920s Vintage Clothing garment such as an evening gown. The weight of the beads or other vintage accents could weaken or tear delicate silk.
